Biographie de l'auteur :
Henry Shukman made his name as a travel writer with books such as `Travels with My Trombone: A Caribbean Journey' and `Sons of the Moon: A Journey in the Andes' (both published by Chalkstream Books). He is an award-winning English poet and writer. In 2000 he won the Daily Telegraph Arvon Prize, and in 2003 his first poetry collection, `In Dr No's Garden', won the Jerwood Aldeburgh Poetry Prize. His book was also a Book of the Year in the Times and Guardian, and he was selected as a Next Generation Poet in 2004. As a fiction writer he won the Author's Club First Novel Award in 2006 for his short novel `Sandstorm', and as well as winning an Arts Council England Writer's Award, he has been a finalist for the O. Henry Prize. His second novel, `The Lost City', was a Guardian Book of the Year, and in America it was a National Geographic Book of the Month. His poems have appeared in the New Republic, Guardian, Times, Daily Telegraph, Independent on Sunday, Times Literary Supplement and London Review of Books. Shukman currently lives in New Mexico with his wife and two sons, where he teaches at the Institute of American Indian Arts.
Présentation de l'éditeur :
On a vast plateau high in the Bolivian Andes live the "Sons of the Moon", the Aymara. This great pre-Columbian empire, the first in South America, was a peaceful nation which flourished - as the Aymara legends tell us - under the gentle light of the moon. Then the sun rose, the fertile land dried up, and the Aymara's were captured by the sun-worshipping Incas of Peru. A few Aymaras remain, scattered in tiny communities, their land, the Altiplano, baked by the sun and whipped by ferocious winds, is one of the most inhospitable parts of South America. Henry Shukman is one of the first travel writers to seek out the Aymara race and describe them in detail. His adventures take him to remote outposts and into the hearts of local fiestas, where celebration and violence go hand in hand.
